After a rather frustrating day on Sunday, and lots of busy-ness on Monday, we were more than ready to get something done today! We got an early start and were eating breakfast before 7:00 AM. We jumped right into our first job--removing the large industrial vent/hood from the kitchen of the dorm. It had never been completely installed and made functional. Darren went up into the attic with a large crescent wrench while Roger directed the action down below. By 7:45 we had detached it from the ceiling and had it outside on the deck!!
Not long after that everyone was on their way to their respective job sites.
Carol and Betty were helping Lorena at the Thrift Store with the big jeans sale. Carol contacted the local radio station and arranged for a series of ads to be broadcast over the next three days. The ads worked! Soon there were many customers at the store wanting jeans. Lorena was very happy with how things are going.
Roger, Darren and Brooks went out to the James and Bessie's house where they are working to help finish some indoor projects in two bedrooms. They quickly completed all the tasks that they had planned for the day--relocating a closet door and insulating the attic above two bedrooms. They returned to town by lunch time.
Over at the Shiprock United Methodist Church Alesia, Darlene, Samm, Nora, Kathy, Lisa and Phil got started on the painting of the Fellowship Hall. Everyone saw what needed doing and got at it. Quickly cracks in walls were being patched, masking tape was laid down and lots of cleaning was happening. Soon the crew was painting around the edges and along the ceiling.
Back at the dorm Nancy was preparing our food for lunch.
After lunch, everyone went to the church and the guys started reinforcing the sheetrock ceiling which was sagging in places. They put in 2x4 braces to hold the sheetrock up and started putting patches over the cracks. Darlene and Phil started doing some "honey-do" jobs around the church while Alesia, Nora, Kathy and Lisa started painting the walls in the Fellowship Hall. Roger and Brooks headed back to Farmington for more supplies, especially drywall for James and Bessie's house. By 5:00 PM we "got-r-did"!
This evening was very special. Nancy made a delicious supper of lasagna, garlic bread and salad. Our special guest was Sam Sandoval, a veteran of WWII who served with the Marines as a Code Talker. He proudly wore the medals he had received for his service as he told of his training and service and how he and his fellow "Code-talkers" used their Navajo language with a special twist that they created among themselves to make a code that was never broken.
We have been eating very well thanks to Nancy's careful planning and hard work! Hopefully we are working hard enough to burn all the extra calories.
Thank you all for your prayers and support!! We miss you but we are feeling very fulfilled with how the work went today.
